Find Your Place in the Sun- Cancun
The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – St. Augustine of Hippo.
I love to travel, meet new people, go on adventures and explore cultures. Working for an airline helped me bring these desires to life. I am very fortunate to have visited some spectacular cities and experienced some of the wonders of the world. Some of my great memories were formed – standing barely 50 feet from the Statue of Liberty in New York; walking through the masterpiece of one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the Chichen Itza in Mexico; parasailing over the Bahamas and shark diving in the beautiful clear blue waters in Cape Town.
‘Travel Scenes’ introduces exotic places I have visited with the objective of showcasing a new destination with each article. I invite you to re- live each destination through the pictures, memorable tales that should leave your existence with an urge to see the world. There will also be a few recommendations and tips when travelling to these places. There are endless wonders and sights to experience and behold around you – some are only feet away from you and others – continents apart. Wherever your view, the beauty of the earth is all around you, waiting on you to unravel each piece and savour the experience.
The first feature destination is Cancun in Mexico – one of the world’s most exciting and intriguing destinations. It was such a memorable experience for me in Cancun and I unveil some of those memories here – from finding your place in the sun on the crystal clear beaches or staying at the paradise on earth ‘Paradisus Cancun’ and exploring the exotic original Mexican Tacos and Tequila. I also showcase exhilarating moments of snorkelling over part of the Great Mesoamerican Reef – the second largest coral reef in the world.
Find your place in the Sun
Cancun was designed with the beach life in mind, and with good reason. There are some pretty special beaches there. The glittering Caribbean Sea and mile upon mile of pristine white sand make Cancun the ultimate destination to relax by day, whether it is a beach holiday, honeymoon bliss or just a sumptuous family vacation – Cancun is the perfect spot.
A perfect holiday is always a thrilling thought which conjures up images of idyllic white beaches, obscenely blue seas and lazy days on sun loungers, safe in the knowledge that all your friends back in Nigeria would not believe the scenery and would give anything to enjoy this. A Cancun vacation is one of the most delightful vacations in a heavenly destination.
All it takes to achieve this dream is a simple nine hour flight to Cancun from London. I flew out of Lagos on Virgin Atlantic and connected the next morning via Gatwick to Cancun. The overnight layover gives you time to rest if you are of those with the ‘flying blues’. On the Virgin Atlantic flight to Cancun, it was a true prelude to a perfect holiday. Once you arrive in Cancun, you have the option of spending your time in Cancun itself or travelling 40 minutes south to the Riviera Maya. I must say – Cancun offers the most attractive accommodations in the surrounding destinations.
Set on an island connected to the mainland by two bridges north and south, Cancun’s hotel zone is a mix of party central and luxury resorts, with the Mexican Caribbean to one side and a wide lagoon to the other. Along the 14-mile stretch of powdery white shoreline, you’ll find a modern mix of trendy bars, restaurants and shopping malls, tucked between the large-scale all-inclusive resorts.
Cancun hotels provide lodging options for every taste that will surely please the most demanding guests. The magnificent Cancun resorts are what set Cancun apart from other tourist cities and many of them feature all-inclusive plans where you will have all meals, beverages and entertainment included. What is more important, in all of the Cancun hotels, you will always enjoy a personalized attention and the warm hospitality typical of the Mexican people.
The Paradisus Cancun is an exclusive beach resort perfectly situated on the soft white sand beaches of Cancun and it provides the perfect accommodations for a vacation getaway. Here you get a chance to experience the stunning beauty that has made Cancun an international destination in the comfort of a luxury resort on par with the highest standards of excellence. It has luxurious, spacious and elegantly decorated rooms on a pristine beach that is a short 15 minutes from the airport. Whether you are on the beach, at one of the four lagoon-inspired pools, or dining in any of the nine on-site restaurants, you will find something to meet your every need. You can even indulge yourself with their upgraded Royal Service and really pamper yourself.
The Paradisus Cancun is truly where you will find your dreamlike holiday with an all-white world of calm, far away from the incredible nightlife further down the strip. As you sip a coconut cocktail at your private check-in desk, cooling down with a cold, scented towel, it is not hard to understand why is referred to as the ‘the paradise’
This adults-only resort completely redefines the term ‘all inclusive’, with a butler on every floor to welcome you ‘home’ and unpack for you; three outdoor pools including two with swim-up bars; large, light rooms with Swiss spa showers and baths; full size bottles of spirits, and a monster room service menu that would take weeks to devour. The huge Jacuzzi bath next to a panoramic window overlooking the beach is a sublime touch, but what makes it so special are all the little details: the pool concierge roaming the sunbeds every afternoon with ice lollies, the complimentary beach bags, the light-up side tables decorated with decadent petite fours every night, and staff who go out of their way to help and get to know you.
If you want to come to Cancun to party with a group of friends, the Paradisus have got you covered. This design-focused, South Beach-inspired hotel offers various tiers of ‘experience package’, from the adults-only, everything-under-the-sun collection of suites known as ‘The Level’ to the smaller but equally stylish Aura or Ocean Front rooms. Whether you want to spend all day lazing around the pool and beach being waited on, take a trip to nearby Isla Mujeres, or snorkel over part of the Great Mesoamerican Reef – the second largest coral reef in the world – there is no doubt you will come back from Cancun with an incredible experience, wonderful memories and a burning desire to return.
For Nigerians: Most people are not aware that when you have a US Visa in your Nigerian passport, that entitles you to entry into Cancun. When you have a US visa, you do not need a Mexican visa. If you do not have a US visa, you will need to apply for a visa from the Mexican Consulate in Nigeria located in Abuja: 39 Usuma St, Abuja. Tel: 09 462 0630
A quick tip for when you arrive at the Immigration point in Cancun – they do not see too many Nigerian passports in Mexico, so be patient at immigration because it might take a little longer for us with the green passports. But as soon as you step into Cancun, you will instantly forget all that stress.
Take time out and find your ‘paradise’ in a unique destination and create unforgettable memories and do share your exceptional experience when you get back.
