Carnage Continues in Taraba and Adamawa
About 60 women were abducted from Waga Mangoro and Garta villages in Adamawa State by Boko Haram militants and in a turn of unprecedented events, returned. On the day of the abduction, about a 100 terrorists, attacked the communities on motorcycles and vans, going on rampage, burning houses and causing havoc which led to the abduction of women and young girls.
Speaking to us, a resident of Garta said that the terrorists went from house to house to select the women and then forced their relatives to accept N1,500 and kola nuts as bride price.
The insurgents are still in the area. They slit the throats of three men in Garta and abducted many young women. We also heard from residents of Wagga that they killed two men and took 40 women away.
The Nigerian government announced a ceasefire deal with Boko Haram recently which was supposed to be sealed with the release of more than 200 abducted Chibok Girls that have caused Nigeria as a country, an increased amount of bad publicity in the eyes of the international media.
Recent developments have cast doubts on that possibility.
On the 19th of October 2014, The Christian Reformed Church Nigeria (CRC-N), raised an alert over the reported killing of about 30 members by suspected terrorists in some parts of Taraba State, despite the ceasefire agreement which was was said to have been declared by the Federal Government and members of Boko Haram. Among the persons killed during the attack were the Pastor of the Sondi Church in Taraba and his only male child. Another Pastor identified as Nuhu Useni, was also killed by terrorists on the way to his farm.
According to our sources, casualties were high because “security tips seemed not to have been responded to by the security agents as expected.” Continuous carnage and reports of genocide has continued by Islamic insurgents and Hausa-Fulani insurgents in the Wukari area of Taraba State. This pandemonium has been going on since February. The villages of Gindin Waya and Sondi were attacked recently, just on the 19th of October.
The attack led to the death of four persons in Gindin Waya, and 27 persons in Sondi. The huge army of insurgents that attacked Sondi had many of the insurgents in army uniforms.
The Taraba State government has for a really long time, sat on their hands while there is continued looting, destruction, killing and displacement of its own people.
The Federal Government needs to wade into the dark murky water that is the bloodshed in Southern Taraba. The Hausa-Fulani North seems determined to wipe Southern Taraba off the map of this country. One Local Government Area has been attacked seven times and the laxity in the country’s security network is showing. Gaping holes in the information gathering skill of our security agents and plain cowardice is what the residents of this neighbourhood scream out when questioned by the press.
There is no better time than yesterday to right the wrong that is being plotted out for tomorrow. The reality of the massacre going on in this area is an everyday affair for the people here. Their reality is far removed from the cries of the proposed ceasefire and the jubilation of people in the cities. This is their reality. Their own war cry. For the people of Southern Taraba and Adamawa, they urge the Federal Government to recognise the need to stand up to right the wrong, before any one of us can write about the wrong.
